Every body who is familiar with the health benefits of food grade oils knows that, apart from hemp oil (CBD oil), Virgin Olive oil is the oil to beat. But how many of us Know that, in today’s markets chacracterised by sharp practices, the leaf of the Olive tree is more medicinal than the oil ? That is the picture we obtain from ARNOLD TAKE MOTO. B. S., a biochemist and nutritionist and David Richard, a natural health writer and author of ANNOINT YOURSELF WITH OIL. From different directions, both men converge on this point. Take moto treats chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia of viral and bacterial origins with Olive leaf Extract (OLE) and, through his work, encourages us to believe that there is no virus and bacterium that OLE cannot subdue and conquer. Is one of the 50 American Alternative Medicine physicians captured by editors of the ALTERTNATIVE MEDICINE DIGEST in the book CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME, FIBROMYALGIA and ENVIRONMENTAL ILLNESSES.He says:
“It is the missing link that functions as an anti-inflammatory, anti- Viral, and anti- retroviral agent by slowing down the organism’s reproductive cycle … allows the patient’s immune system to go on the attack”. David Richard reviews the status of all oils as cosmetic, food grade or aromatherapy . In the food grade bracket, he defines quality and, hence, usefulness for health purposes as dependent on whether the oil is mechanically expressed, that is cold pressed ( Virgin or extra virgin). Of course, the cold pressed oil is the best. Oil get poorer in quality when they are heat or chemically expressed. From this stand- point, David Richard invites us to behold the treasure trove of Olive oil and warns us at the same time that many products labelled ” Virgin” or ” extra Virgin” are not what they pretend to be. He says:
” Extra- virgin… means that the oil is unrefined, and has been mechanically pressed without the destructive effect of heat or chemical additives.
Extra virgin refers to an unrefined oil which is from the first pressing of the Olive, and is the most nutritionally -rich. Olive oil has the oldest tradition of usage of any of the oils and is most closely associated with the development of civilisation. Olive oil is Rich in mono- unsatuated fatty acids(100percent) and is subsequently most stable than other oils containing more of the EFA . Because the oil comes from the soft fruit of olive, it is the only mass marketed unrefined oil. In other words, it is the only healthy oil, in my opinion, that you can buy at the super market”.
David Richard tells us that, despite low level of EFAs, there are many immense benefits to radiant health in olive oil.. they help to prevent heart and blood vessel diseases, improve brain and nerve functions and prevent cell damage and improve cellular wall membrane health. David Richard, quoting Udo Erasmus, one of the world’s leading authorities on fats and oils, mentioned some of the continuents of virgin olive oil as ” beta carotene, and Vitamin E, Chorophyll, squalene, phytostens and various triterpen modified sterols, polyphenols and over 100 volatile organic compounds”. He says refined olive oil has lost many of these substances because it has been over processed. Also deficient in refined olive oil is Oleuropin ,” which has anedoctally shown benefits in treating HIV positive patients as well as microbial activity and therapeutic value in cases of dermatitis and psoriasis”. David Richard would appear, therefore, to have more confidence in Olive leaf in which he says these compounds are more concentrated and suggests that ” an Olive leaf Extract may be greater than the extra efficacy of virgin oil.
In this frame of mind is Dr. Donald Gray, D C.,N.D., H.N.D., of Toronto, Canada. He treats chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with OLE, having successfully treated himself with it to end more than ten years of sinusitis. He said what” is needed is what rids the person of bacteria and viral infections, and, now, I have found the appropriate”.
Dr Gray Kaplan,D. O, often found relationships between CFS and fibromyalgia on one hand and intestinal problems on the other. For these scenarios, he says:
“My job as a physician is to figure out what steps to take to unload and distress my patient’s system, and to bring their intestinal microflora back into balance so that their digestion and absorbtion processes work well, and , thereby, restore their health”.
One of his case studies mentioned was the scenarios of a woman aged 42 named Lizzy. She had symptoms of fibromyalgia. ” She complained of generalised joint pain in her hand, hips, knees and ankles, which had begun 12 months earlier, says Dr Kaplan. ” she also had sporadic but significant fatigue and sinus problem that never completely went away after each episod . For the frequent acne she had suffered from her whole adult life, Lucy took a conventional drug called NINOCYCLINE HYDROCHORIDE ( a tetracycline antibiotic) to control the outbreaks. At one point before seeing me, Lucy had received a diagnosis of systemic Lupus Erytomatoseus (SLE), a dangerous auto – immune disease. However, blood work performed by another physician failed to confirm this diagnosis. Lucy followed a healthy, mostly vegetarian diet, eating only a minimum of dairy products and meat and a great deal of whole grains. Despite her chronic pain, she exercised regularly by running and cycling several times a week”.
Lizzy’s problem began shortly after she traveled to Eastern Europe. The month before the travel, Lucy neither ate nor slept well. She was under constant stress by family questions. Dr.Kaplan thought she may have been exposed to situations which ignited allergic reactions in her.
“In effect”, says Dr Kaplan, ” you have a woman under stress who has experienced exposure that pushed her over the immunological edge . The question is then, in what area will the immune resistance break down? In Lucy’s case, it broke down in the three fold area of chronic environment, digestion and absorbtion. My job as a physician is to figure out what steps to take to unravel and destress her system, and to bring her intestinal microflora back into balance so that her digestion and absorbtion processes work well, and, thereby, restore her health”.
Suspecting that Lucy may have pick up intestinal parasites abroad, Dr Kaplan ordered stool tests for digestion, absorbtion, colonic integrity and yeast profiles. He wished to know if Lucy was digesting the food she was eating, how well or how poorly, what enzymes were present or absent, if part of the digested food was well absorbed or not , and if intestinal bacteria were in harmonious balance or if yeast was having a field day.
In many patient’s, Dr. Kaplan did find that parasite presence caused all antigenic reactions by the body which led to joint pains and, sometimes, asthma. Antigens ( foreign substances) are seen by the immune system as outsiders and dangerous. It launches an attack against them, sometimes employing free radicals which, in prolonged use or deployment, may affect also the body, especially if the affected parts had become hiding places for the antigens.
Dr Kaplan once had a male patient who developed a cardiac ( heart) infection ” followed by asthma symptoms indicating an antigenic reaction. In order words, the antigenic reaction is to the parasite manifested as asthma”. He said that” when the cardiac was treated, the asthma symptom disappeared”.
Lucy had no parasites. But her intestinal bacterial Flora were out of balance in favour of the unfriendly ones. The friendly ones that had been reduced in population, according to the test results, included LACTOBACILLUS and BIFDO bacteria. They help to produce some vitamins often lacking in the diet, neutralise or detoxify pro-carcinogens ( potential cancer causing chemical substances) and support the immune system. A deficiency or a lack of LACTOBACILLUS has been associated with some chronic diseases in other parts of the body. One of the most frequently encountered unfriendlyd organism’s is CANDIDA ALBICANS, a yeast form. It is normally found in small population, and it’s population is kept in check by lactic acid produce by friendly bacteria. However, antibiotic use, birth control pills and high carbohydrates in the diet promotes overgrowth or over population of candida albicans. The outcome may be such conditions as” food allergies, migraines, Vaginitis, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion and asthma”. Green or yellow stool may signal oncoming diarrhoea or suggest an intestine sterilised by antibiotics. Black or red may means bleeding far away from or near the anus.
Gray stool may means bile ducts in the liver are blocked. Mucus or pus may warn of irritable bowel syndrome ( IBS), diverticulitis, or inflammation of the intestinal wall. Many Nigerians fear a diagnosis of occult blood, associating it with ulceration in the colon which may degenerate into a cancer if invaded by candida. It may very well be caused, also, by the consumption of too much red meat as well as by heamorrhoids. The colon operates, like other parts of the body on an ACID/ ALKALINE balance or pH balance measured on a O- 14 scale in which values below seven are acid, seven is neutral and those above seven are alkaline. In the colon, the preferred pH balance is 6.0 to 7. 2. Below 6.0 and above 7.2, the colon may be inefficient, bombarded by germs and parasites which enjoy and thrive in pH environment in hospitable to colon cells and tissues. Elevated levels of stool ( fecal pH are linked to higher risks of colon inflammation colitis) and colon cancer. Also risky for the colon are low levels of N- Butyrate, a form of Butyric Acid, a source of energy for cells in cells lining. Low levels of it slow metabolism and this may forment digestive havocs.
These are not all the pictures a stool or fecal test is transmitting to the analysing physician. There is another picture called the SCFAs. This stands for short Chain Fatty Acids, SCFAs are produced when soluble fiber is fermented in the colon. This suggests that an absence of soluble fiber or a deficiency of it means deficiency of energy for colon cells to work with.
Soluble fiber provides as high as 70 percent of the energy requirements of cells which line the colon. This is why it is advisable to add lots of vegetables to the diet or to consume proprietary soluble fiber food supplements. A diet filled with refined carbohydrates and white flour foods is defficient in soluble fiber and will, as shown, cause trouble(s) in the colon. These troubles may range from poor nutrient absorbtion in the colon to bacterial overgrowth .Bacterial overgrowth may cause the elevation of an enzyme they produce called BETA GLUCORONATDASE. This enzyme may be fuelled, also, by too much dietary fat, especially from meat. Whatever the source(s), a net effect of it’s presence in large amounts is that it may activate the action of cancer – causing substances which may otherwise have lay inactive. If they damaged the colon, and make it leak, the see page may affect the prostate gland in men, causing inflammation, enlargement or cancer.
There are still more ” pictures” the physician would like to check in the stool. One of this is an enzyme produced in the spleen, bone marrow or in the lymphatic system.
Back to Lucy…
Lizzy’s presentation is as follows…
“Lizzy’s stools were a normal brown colour” , it is reported, ” with no trace of blood or mucus, but their Chemical nature, or pH, was slightly too akaline at 7.3. Among the benefical bacteria we expect to find in the healthy colon, Lizzy was completely defficient of LACTOBACILLUS varieties. All through her stool showed evidence of gamma streptocococcus in the normal range of non beneficial microbes Astoll, measured pseudomonas arueginosa beyond the acceptable limit”.
This made the colon grow a strain of bacteria which was a stranger there .
To cut the long story short, as we always say in Nigeria, Dr. Gray Kaplan tell us how he helped Lizzy to get rid of her fibromyalgia.
” In my estimation” , he says,” three principal factors we’re responsible for throwing Lizzy’s digestive system out of balance ( producing the abnormal stool analysis values) and creating her symptoms: A yeast overgrowth, a wheat sensitivity, and a DHEA difficiency. By reversing these, her fibromyalgia was resolved”.
Lizzy is a lucky woman because it takes a wider range of therapies often times to knock out her type of condition . These often involves dietary lifestyle changes, enzymes therapy, probiotics therapy, immune boosting, abd herbs. It may take between three and six months or even one year to overcome local symptoms, such as vaginal candidasis, foggy brain, kidney or pancreatic disturbances e.t.c, before yeast overgrowth in the colon, sources of this malaise, is stamped out. Thus, local treatments for local manifestation is not always the answer to those conditions. Yeast overgrowth in the colon must be eliminated.
Olive Leaf Extract
With grateful thanks to Dr Gary Kaplan for his insights, the book CHRONIC FATIGUE, and ENVIRONMENTAL ILLNESS is well recommended for the health library of all seekers of radiant health. Dr Robert C. Atkins, who has never failed to deepen our understanding of medicinal therapies outside the realms of orthodoxy, tells us about Olive Leaf Extract.
” One of the new hottest Infection fighters is not new at all…… doctors used Olive Leaf as long ago as 1927 to knock out Malaria. Calcium Enolate, the leaf’s most active ingredient,is an extra_ ordinary effective killer of viruses and bacteria. It also keeps latent viruses from energizing.
“The leaf offers at least some relief, if, not completely recovery from the entire rogue’s gallery of microbial ailments….pneumonia, gonorrhea, tuberculosis, influenza, viral encephalitis, viral meningitis, hepatitis B, shingles, herpes and Epstein Barr. It’s also a worthwhile treatment for surgical infections, and any sort of bacterial infection. But Olive Leaf also destroys yeast infections at the same time. Olive Leaf grabbed my attention because of it’s ability to produce a side effect. It is, however, a beneficial side effect that mirrors its value . While the extract t is entirely no toxic, tackling too much, too soon can make you Sicker before you get better. This temporary side effect apparently stems from the so – called die off reaction, which is normally a concern only when anti- microbial agents are extremely effective. Killing higher micro- organism such as yeast, and a massive scale inundate the body with toxins from the dying organisms, and the liver cannot dispense with them fast enough. Symptoms vary, depending on the infection, but at first you may feel worse, particularly with respect to fatigue. Once the reaction passes, shortly after you scale down the dose, your ailments usually disappears, too. And that is what impresses me about Olive Leaf. After all, antibiotics do not kill bacteria and yeast. I’ve been able to minimize the risk of “die-off” by keeping the dosage initial doses of Olive Leaf small, usually a single 500mg capsule a day. Later the course of the week, I increase the amount until my patient is taking 2,000mg per day, which is usually all that is necessary. Once the infections or illness begins to abate, I taper down the dose to one or two capsules a day.
Olive Leaf is not the only herb we can use to fight yeast and viruses in these conditions. As Dr Atkins says:
“Organic oil is probably the champ. However introduction to it, when a single dose quickly relieved a bad winter- time cold, I had contacted, I have Oregano for many patients. Now, I have come to depend upon it to treat any infection, including yeast growth, for which it is one of the very best treatments”. He mentions, also, Tee Tree oil, mother Nature knows about these organisms….. and about us, and has provided us with the ammunition to deal with them, should they threaten our existence. The treasure home of Nature stocks more than Olive Leaf Extract and Oregano oil.
